The Redline team have fought through four long days to come out on top after an exciting penultimate day of racing at the National Championships held by our home club South of Perth Yacht Club.
After finishing the round robin series on top with 21 wins and 1 loss we had the right to choose our opponent for the semi-final, naturally we choose the 4th placed team, Team Gilmour skipper by Peter Nicholas.
The semi-final was sailed in a fresh 12-20 knots with big shifts since we were sailing adjacent to the yacht club. Both Redline Racing and Team Gilmour teams had a win each going into the final race of the semi-final where the winner would proceed to the final. In last minute to the start Team Gilmour were penalised with two penalties. This forced Team Gilmour to take their first penalty as soon as the race started. The team stayed calm and went on to win the semi-final earning a spot in the final.
The team was now waiting for the final with our competitor being Evan Walker and his team from The Cruising Yacht Club of Australia. Evan was the defending champion and four time winner, he has a habit of lifting his game for the finals series and we were well aware of the quality of our competitor.
The first race started with a Pre-Start manoeuvre where both boats needed to slow down while going downwind. This is a technical manoeuvre and unfortunately Mark, the Trimmer from was hit extremely hard in the nose and was leaking blood all over the boat. Fortunately the bleeding stopped halfway through the race and the team could proceed as usual.
One comical momentum was going down wind when Mark asked “Am I bleeding” to a fast response “Yes we are leading”, Nevertheless the team came over these minor communication errors to push through for a comfortable win in race 1, Race 2 followed similar suit with Evan broaching downwind (pictured below) leaving us 2-0 going into the final.
Evan and his team stepped up for the final race by winning the start and gave us a penalty, We fought hard to hold Evan to the Layline and keep our inside lane before the top Mark, We luffed Evan past the 2 boat length Zone and wiped our penalty, See our Facebook page for a picture of this luff.
After whipping our penalty we continued to hold the slim lead for the final 3 legs to finish as the Champions, see the two following photos of our small lead for the final 3 legs and the team crossing the finish line before the photo of us all.
A big thanks to South of Perth Yacht Club for supporting us and Musto performance gear for keeping us equipped to tackle all conditions. The team is looking to keep pushing for the rest of the summer match racing season.
